Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 29th September

The children had a great week this week making fruit kebabs (still a few to do!) and writing about the Evil Pea! They have adapted well to the morning routines and we are seeing improvement in handwriting and phonics. Thank you to those of you who are reading with your child and contributing to their haul of team points – it really does make a difference. Reading to your child is just as good as listening to them read when they are tired – the main objective is the pleasure of sharing a book or story.

Next week we will be practising pairing up upper and lower case letters as this is something that causes problems when they need to use a keyboard and all the letters are capitals! Here is a simple online game for practice: Upper and lower case letters

Maths next week will be counting on and back with numbers to 10/20 and finding a number 1 more or 1 less. Many children are confident counting forwards and backwards to 10 when they are starting at 1 or 10, but we will also be encouraging them to be able to count forwards and backwards from any number with confidence.

In computing, as well as working on logging on, we have begun using a free online app called Sketchpad so that the children can work on their ‘drag and drop’ skills with a mouse. They found it hilarious when they were able to increase the size of their pictures to fill the whole screen!

In art we will be vegetable printing and in PHSCE we will talking about the different emotions and what they look and feel like.

The School Health Nursing Team are back again on Monday to teach us about oral hygiene and the Earth and Fire teams are at Forest Camp on Monday afternoon. There is no swimming next week (we are alternating with Year 2) but there will be PE on Friday as usual so the children will need to come in wearing PE kit and trainers or plimsolls.

Thanks,

The Year 1 Team
