Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 22nd September

Next week will be a busy week! We will be starting our longer phonics sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so your child will be bringing home an A5 plastic folder containing the book that they have been reading in class for them to share with you at home.  We will also be reading some Supertato stories and making ‘wanted’ posters for the Evil Pea!

In maths we will be continuing our work on place value by looking at different ways to represent numbers (digits, number words, pictures different kinds of counting materials), counting on and finding 1 more than a number. Board games like ludo or snakes and ladders can be a good way to practise counting on at home.

Now that they are all planned, the children will be making fruit kebabs for their friends to enjoy and in science we will be exploring the senses, with some activities testing the senses of hearing and touch. In PHSCE we will be talking about the children’s bedtime routines.

On Monday morning we will be having a visit from the school  health nursing team to learn about hand hygiene and Monday afternoon will be Forest Camp for the Air and Water teams. On Wednesday afternoon we will be having our first swimming lessons (children will need a named towel, costume and hat). If possible, it would be a good idea to avoid tights for the girls as they are the things that cause the most difficulty when getting dressed! On Thursday morning there will be a Perform drama workshop about castles, princesses and knights.

Thanks,

The Year 1 Team
