Welcome back to a new term, we hope you all had a lovely Easter!
On Thursday 1st May, we will be having a bake sale after school under the shelter on KS1 playground, to raise money for our PTA class fund. All money raised will be split between Year 1 and Kites to update class learning resources. We will be making a few treats to sell (within our classes) but would very much appreciate any delicious contributions by the morning of Thursday May 1st. If any parents are available to help out with setting out and selling cakes then please let us know – your help would be much appreciated!
This term there will be lots of phonics practice, in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check in June. Here are two short videos we have looked at this week to practise our word-reading skills, and one that explains a bit about the Phonics Screening Check:
Our interhouse challenge this term is for the children to have a go at talking to the class for 1 minute on a subject that really interests them – could be a pet, favourite animal, hobby, sport. We thought we would do a team each week (it isn’t compulsory) so that there is enough time, and do it instead of show and tell. Next Tuesday we will start with the Air team, then Earth the following week, then Fire, then Water. It is fine for the children to bring notes, pictures or objects if that will be helpful. Each child will earn team points for their team by taking part.
In maths next week we are looking at simple multiplication and division: counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and putting numbers of objects into equal groups. In science we will be learning about plants and growing our own runner beans, and in geography about the countries that make up the U.K. and different geographical features (mountains, rivers etc).
P.E. will be lots of running and jumping so that we are well prepared for Sports Day next term. Swimming has restarted and Miss Snowden’s class will be swimming this week along with the group from Miss Bartlett’s class who were swimming every week before.
Thank you for your continued support,
The Year 1 Team
