Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 5 update. We’ve been informed by the office that the email notifications you should have been receiving about these updates might have been going into Junk folders. That means that this could be the first of these you’ve read. I’ve been writing these every week. Honest!
Anyway, this week your children have been up to the following:
- It’s the school’s Poetry Fortnight and we’ve been learning about haikus and senryus (ask your kids!). Next week, we’ll be learning about renga poems, and we’ll be practising for our class recital competitions!
- In maths, some children have been working on fractions and others have been working hard on some tricky tests.
- In history, we learned about the Battle of Marathon, and the messenger Pheidippides, whose 26-mile journey from Marathon to Athens was the first race of that name. (Ask your children what happened to him once he finished!)
- In science, we finished conducting our experiment on whether heavier things fall faster. Next week, we’ll analyse the results and draw some conclusions.
- In PE on Monday, we have been doing some fitness work in circuits.
Spelling words
This week, we’ve been learning to spell some words with silent letters. They are: ascend, autumn, build, disciple, doubt, island, lamb, receipt, solemn and thistle.
Greek flatbread making
On Friday 13th February the children will be making their own Greek flatbreads. If you could please send in any mixing bowls or rolling pins that would be very helpful – we promise they will come back clean – and the children are invited to bring in a small tub of a dip of their choice, as long as it is nut free and suitable to their dietary requirements. School will provide the rest of the ingredients.
PE
PE will be on Monday and Friday this week, and they will both be outdoors, so please make sure your children wrap up warm on both those days. In addition, Friday’s session will be on the field so please make sure your children come to school with a spare pair of footwear.
