Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4 Week 2 update

Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 5 update. Whisper it, but hasn’t this week felt a bit like spring? It’s been so lovely to be able to spend a bit more time outside during lesson time. Hopefully it continues!

This week, your children have been up to the following:

  • In literacy, we have been continuing to read The Boy At The Back Of The Class, and through it we’ve been learning about the plight of refugees and writing opinion pieces about whether violence is okay if we’re fighting a bully.
  • In maths, we’ve either been working on measuring and calculating angles, or we’ve been working on fractions.
  • In history, we continued to look at the Ancient Maya Civilisation. We concentrated on where in the world they were situated, and started to think about why they were so successful.
  • In PE, we did some circuit training in the sunshine on Monday, and practised our basketball skills on Friday.

World Book Day

We had an excellent time on Thursday, celebrating World Book Day! Year 5 spent the whole day off normal lessons, doing fun reading-based activities, like:

  • We spent the morning choosing from a host of different reading experiences; teachers and grown-ups across KS2 read their favourite fiction and non-fiction texts, and others played audiobooks.
  • There was also an ‘Ultimate Character Battle’ speech competition,
  • The children drew pictures of their favourite reading spots,
  • We developed their own class reading charters,
  • The day ended with Mr Burrows reading a whole-school bedtime story (hence the pyjamas!).

Look out for pictures of the day on our social media channels soon!

Spelling words

This week, we’ve been learning to spell words with ‘ie’ after c. They are: society, deficient, efficient, emergencies, glacier, inefficient, science, scientists, species and sufficient.

PE

PE will be on Monday and Friday this week, and they will both be outdoors, so please make sure your children wrap up warm on both those days (though hopefully not too warm!).

We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we will see your children bright and early on Monday morning.
