Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 5 update. We’ve just posted a few photos of our Ancient Greece day from earlier this week on the website (click here, or check out the Year 5 page on the website and look at Latest News), and there will soon be a post on our social media channels. It was a brilliant day! Once again, thank you so much to those people who volunteered. The day could not have happened with you.
This week, your children have been up to the following:
- In literacy, we have been building towards creating and writing our own Greek myths by writing ones as a class. Next week, it’ll be the children’s turn! If you wanted to help with this process over the weekend, please read some Greek myths to your children or find videos of Greek myths for them to watch.
- In maths, some children have moved onto decimals and others are working on multiplication and division.
- For more information about what we got up to in history this week, go to our Ancient Greece day page!
- In science this week, we started our new topic of Forces. We used Newton Meters to understand how the force of gravity acts on different objects. Next week, we’ll be exploring the question, ‘Do heavier things fall faster?’
- In computing, the children were learning about the computer architecture of Mars Rovers.
Spelling words
This week, our spelling words all have suffixes where the root word ends in ‘-fer’. They are: conferring, difference, inference, preference, preferred, referee, reference, referring, transference and transferring.
Speak Up! Our new oracy campaign
- Talking about their day
- Asking open-ended questions
- Reading aloud together
- Encouraging children to explain their thinking
- Modelling good listening
PE
PE will be on Monday and Friday this week, and they will both be outdoors, so please make sure your children wrap up warm on both those days. In addition, Friday’s session will be on the field so please make sure your children come to school with a spare pair of footwear.
