Year 5 2024-25: Term 5 Week 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

In the week that our Y5/6 Girls’ football team became South Oxfordshire champions, there were also lots of positive things going on inside the classrooms.

Literacy has revolved around the fantastic amount of animal research done by the children at home (the enthusiasm and support for this has been great – thank you!). The children have organised their information into subheadings and written up some interesting non-chronological reports complete with an introduction and conclusion. There has also been a sound understanding of how to use colons and semi-colons. Next week we move on, beginning to look at persuasive writing and the features of this genre.

In Maths, we have concluded our work on equivalent percentages, decimals and fractions, with the children showing a good awareness of how to find the answers to such problems when using a hundred square or an amount that is out of one hundred. We will follow this by exploring shape and angles next week, mainly looking at using degrees and drawing and measuring angles with a protractor.

The children have been embracing their creative side across other areas of the curriculum this week. In Art, we have used watercolours to fill in both our hand-drawn poem portraits and the backgrounds, and the children showed off their knowledge of rounders skills in PE before taking on the more challenging aspects of tennis – the backhand shots and volleys.

In Computing, the classes have been furthering their understanding of the blogging world, providing comments on some short pieces written by their friends and discussing why readers sharing their thoughts is useful for those who produce blogs on a regular basis. This was a topic that was also raised in PSHE, where the children created some scenes concerning how to stay safe online.

Have a great long weekend,

The Y5 Team
