Year 5 2024-25: Term 3 Week 4

Dear Parents/Carers,

In Literacy this week we have studied another Greek myth, the tale of Daedalus and Icarus, before comparing the tale to the myths we studied last week. We also revisited the topic of figurative language, where we have focused on similes, metaphors and alliteration – techniques which we will be using when when completing our plans for, and writing up, an alternative ending to the myth Prometheus and Pandora.

Our Maths lessons have seen us move on to finding the perimeter, and some areas, of different shapes such as rectangles and rectilinear shapes, something which has allowed us to practise our addition and multiplication skills. More work on area to come next week, and we may even be ready to look at some statistics by the end of the week.

Following on from Greek Day last week, we studied the Battle of Marathon in more detail, talking about the differences between the city states Athens and Sparta. We then learnt about how the Athenian army overcame the odds to defeat the Persian warriors as well as the outstanding efforts of a young man called Pheidippides, who ran the equivalent of a marathon to relay a message of high importance to the Spartan army. Next week, we will look at the various Greek gods and goddesses in more detail – a subject which has proven very popular over the years!

Elsewhere, we worked on our passing and dribbling skills in basketball in PE, and the children had a go at designing their own monument in Art. Computing saw the children experimenting with Caesar Cipher coding, where they worked in pairs to create an alternative alphabet and set another group the challenge of deciphering their coded message.

And with that, another busy week comes to an end.

Have a fantastic weekend,

The Y5 Team
