Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 2 Week 7

Dear Parents and Carers,

The last lessons of 2024 have been taught, and adults and children alike head off for a well-earned rest.

There have been many highlights in the final week – the children have watched an enjoyable performance of ‘Bugsy Malone’ at MECE, practised and sung their Christmas song in front of a wonderful audience and revelled in the Christmas spirit.

Inside the classroom, we concluded the term with some SPaG practise, experimenting with relative clauses and pronouns (such as which, where, who and when) before moving onto using brackets, commas and dashes to show parenthesis in our writing. Maths saw the children using their addition and subtraction skills on fractions and mixed numbers, and there was more house designing in Computing and Christmas themed fitness circuits in PE. The popular topic of Victorians has also finished, with the children’s final focus being on the different inventions of the time and how some of these creations had an impact on the things we use today.

Next term, we move onto instruction writing in Literacy – beginning with modal verbs and how to use them – before multiplying and dividing with larger numbers in Maths. We will study forces in Science and our new topic will be Ancient Greece, where the children will learn about subjects such as the gods and goddesses, the origin of the Olympics and the Battle of Marathon.

Also with a view to next term, all sports clubs will begin in the second week back unless told otherwise by the adult(s) who run them. More information will be available in the first week back.

One final thing – as many of you are aware, the school has recently started making a real push with marketing itself on the social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X. If you could please follow us, and like and share our updates and achievements, we would really appreciate that.

Our thanks to you and your children for a wonderful first two terms. We wish you all a restful and enjoyable break.

Merry Christmas to you all, and have a great start to 2025,

The Y5 Team
