Sonning Common 2-0 Goring
On Tuesday evening the Year 5/6 girls’ football team hosted Goring Primary School in the penultimate match of our football league season. We knew a win would keep us in the title race as well as secure a top two finish for us in the league table.
We started the game brightly, firing a few crosses across the Goring goal and seeing our shots blocked. After lots of knocking on the door, the breakthrough finally arrived from an unexpected goalscorer.
Sofia, our goalie, gathered the ball in her hands and launched a long goal kick deep into the Goring half. It took a wicked bounce, flew over the Goring goalkeeper and landed in the back of the net to put us into a deserved 1-0 lead.
Not long later, and with confidence flowing through us, we doubled our lead with another shot from our own half. A long ball from Goring bounced up at the feet of Elsie, who hit a tremendous half volley that dipped into the net to send us in 2-0 up at half time.
While there were no more goals in the second half, the team showed how good they were. Across the back, Sofia demonstrated her catching skills with her comfortable saves, while Evie, Hazel, Ella-Lily and Elsie showed how composed they were on the ball, with Lily-May and Sophie adding some solid defensive performances. Going forward, Lola and Freya ran well with the ball at speed, while some great driving runs and pressing from Georgie and Eva helped us keep the ball in the Goring half and create more chances.
Overall, a very positive and composed team performance with lots of individuals shining in their positions.
Thank you to those who came to support the girls as well as Dr Loader for refereeing the match!
The team was: Sofia M-P, Ella-Lily B, Evie Q, Elsie D, Lola B, Sophie A, Freya K, Eva M, Lily-May Y, Hazel B-M and Georgie Q.
