4.7.23 School Council discussed School Events, such as the recent Summer Fair, the Christmas Fair, On Your Bike, the Colour Run, and the Easter Egg Hunt. They were very positive about these events, but had some suggestions for making them better. Classes will be polled on their favourite events and will be asked for suggestions for others.
27.6.23 School Council discussed and polled their classes on Homework. There was mostly positive feelings towards homework but an emphasis on the fact that it needs to be varied if possible to make it interesting.
13.6.23 School Council discussed how lunchtimes on the field are going. They were generally in favour of being allowed on the field, but there were comments about the need for suitable numbers of staff to be present, and for the various rules to be made clear. They are not in favour of some of the more recent restrictions (including not using the hill area).
25.4.23 School Council discussed Design and Technology. There was lots of enthusiasm for the subject, and a request for more of it. There was a suggestion that perhaps an after-school DT club could be set up. Questions for the classes include who might like such a club, their general attitudes to DT, and projects they would be interested in doing.
18.4.23 School Council discussed writing. The focus started with handwriting – the normal start to a school day. There was some understanding that this has two purposes – handwriting practice and settling the class down. We then talked about Big Write, and how teachers help children write more effectively – especially the kind of prompts and inputs used.
17.4.23 School Council discussed changing the day of our meetings, to ensure maximum attendance. To ensure full attendance, Y6 will remind other SC members on the morning of each meeting. It was decided that the meetings would now take place on Tuesdays at playtime. The next meeting will focus on Writing. The next meeting will be tomorrow – 18th April.
27.3.23 School Council discussed Science today. Generally Science is considered a fun topic – the human body (teeth) were a highlight, as were any practical or experimental activities. STEM week was good – the involvement of the scientists from Johnson Matthey was welcomed. Questions to the classes focused on the enjoyment of the subject, STEM week, and the resources available in school for Science.
23.3.23 School Council discussed behaviour today. There was agreement that behaviour in lesson times was generally good, and pupils can learn well. There were some concerns about the behaviour of some groups or individuals at break times and lunch times, and in the library. SLT and the staff will investigate and propose solutions.
13.3.23 School Council discussed PE lessons today. Councillors discussed the fun aspects of PE and the health benefits of keeping fit. There were concerns about the balance between learning new skills and playing full games in PE lessons. Classes were then asked questions about enjoyment of PE, any sports or clubs they would like to see as part of the curriculum (or extra-curricular), and about indoor PE equipment.
6.3.23 School Council finalised the arrangements for Comic Relief Day, which will then be circulated around school and put into the newsletter on Friday. Our discussion this week followed on the topic of Assemblies. School Council had views on the types of assemblies that they most enjoy, about behaviour, about how much they enjoy singing or not. They like the “mystery” of finding out who will get Star of the Week on a Friday. Classes were asked questions about these topics and the results were sent back to SLT.
3.3.23 School Council started to discuss arrangements for Comic Relief (Red Nose Day). Suggestions included a joke competition, various sports ideas, and a silliest hat competition. It was finally decided that we would hold a ‘Wear a hat to school day’, with a competition to judge the best and funniest hats in each class and a grand final in assembly. The fine for wearing a hat will be £1.00.
20.2.23 School Council met to discuss our Rewards and Sanctions system. There was considerable discussion about rewards, and classes are to be asked their views on whether the rewards are appropriate and suitably motivational. In terms of sanctions, the code system was discussed, and particularly whether codes given are adequately recorded and followed up on. There was considerable discussion. Classes will be polled this afternoon and results fed in to SLT and the Staff Meeting this week.
6.2.23 School Council met to discuss Internet Safety. Discussion points included whether there are enough restrictions on internet usage at school (generally, yes); whether children know how to keep themselves safe online (there was good evidence from the meeting that they do); does school do enough through teaching to keep you informed, and have you ever accessed inappropriate material online? Classes will be polled this afternoon and results fed in to SLT and the Staff Meeting this week.
30.1.23 School Council met to discuss Lunchtimes at SCPS. There was some general discussion around the range of food on offer, the arrangements for eating packed lunches, the cutlery and crockery, and the favourite days of the week for school lunches. Classes will be polled this afternoon and results fed in to SLT and the Staff Meeting this week.
21.1.23 School Council met briefly. The structure of SC and the new wider responsibilities (for curriculum and all other matters affecting the school) were discussed. A vote was taken on the best day and time for SC meetings (Mondays at 12.45pm).
