Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4, Week 1

Dear parents,

We have thoroughly enjoyed the brighter weather this week, and have made the most of being outside in Kites Garden! The children have started to spot the signs of spring, as our daffodil and tulip bulbs have started to surface; hopefully, it won’t be long before they are in full bloom.

On Monday this week, we were joined by author Gareth P. Jones in school. We had an inspiring session with him, learning all about his stories and enjoying laughing and sinigng along with him! Our particular favourite was ‘There’s nothing funny about bums!’. We are looking forward to reading some more of his books in Kites in future weeks. On Friday we used our learning from Gareth as well as our knowledge of The Hungry Caterpillar to write our own stories in tales toolkit. I wanted to just let you know what tales toolkit is. Each week on a Friday, the children get the opportunity to write their own stories using a setting and a character, then having a problem and a solution. The children sometimes take inspiration from stories we have read in the week, or come up with their own completely. Here is some more information about tales toolkit. If you want to try it with your children at home here is a link (Tales Toolkit) to the proforma we use in school.

We had an exciting maths lesson on Wednesday, investigating which was the most common colour of Smarties in a tube. We used our questioning skills from Oracy, to ask questions and find out which colour was most popular. We made pictograms and tally charts to reflect our findings.

Speak Up!

We have continued learning about emotions with Drizzle Dragon! He has helped us explore the feeling of disgust. This week, we talked about what makes us feel disgusted and what helps us to feel better if we find something disgusting. We had some really interesting discussions together.

Trips

On the 16th of March we will be going to the Earth Trust, and on the 22nd May we will be going to Bucklebury Farm. I know this might seem like a long time in the future, but we will be looking for support on these trips closer to the time. If you think you might be interested in helping on one of these trips, please speak to us, or Mrs Honor in the office, so that we are able to get the necessary paperwork in place in order to enable you to support us on these trips.

Jumpers and cardigans

We have a number of jumpers and cardigans in Kites which are not named. There have also been several cardigans and jumpers which have gone missing this week. Whilst we always try our best to match the jumper with the child, it makes it much more difficult if it is not clearly named. Please could you make sure that school uniform, including PE kit and forest camp kit is all clearly named. We already have a box of unnamed jumpers which we have acquired since Monday, we will put them out on the playground next week.
