Dear Parents,
We have had a wonderful week in Kites, thinking about Road Safety. We started the week with Bucket Time where we created some beautiful vehicle silhouettes using flour. The children used this as inspiration to make their own drawings of cars, and make vehicle tracks using paint outside.
In preparation for our Christingle celebrations next week, we have been busy learning the songs: Star Blaze and There’s a Light. The children have been fantastic at learning the words and the actions. This week, we have also started a few rehearsals for our upcoming Nativity, which we will continue to rehearse over the coming weeks. Thank you for beginning to source your children’s nativity costumes. Please let us know if you need any support with this.
This week in phonics, the children have been revising the set 1 sounds they have previously been taught. We have also introduced their red phonics book for writing. The children have been working hard to learn how to form the letters, and some have even written some CVC words too. If you would like to practice phonics with your children at home, feel free to go back and use the links in the previous website posts.
In maths we have been focusing on counting with 1-1 correspondence. This means counting the number of objects they have been given successfully. Maybe this is something you could practice at home: counting how many raisins are in a raisin box, counting the number of steps from one room to another, and counting how many letters are in their name. All of these activities help to build up key counting skills.
Next week, we will be thinking about Polar Regions, exploring different animals that might live in the ice. We are going to be doing some ice excavation, making some animal fact files, and beginning to make a winter scene in art.
This term’s top tips!
Reading – reading with your child is one of the most powerful ways to support them to learn language. Reading anything from storybooks to articles, newspapers to audiobooks, is a great way to support children’s development. Remember, it doesn’t always have to be sitting down and reading a book, listening to audiobooks or reading a menu or a recipe is still fantastic to support children’s love of reading. If you’re stuck for ideas, on our Sonning Common Primary Instagram page, there is a fantastic video about reading activities you could do at home (you might need to scroll back a bit, as the post I am referring to is from the 25th April).
