Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 6 week 2

Dear Parents,

We have had a fascinating week finding out about our oceans around the world and what World Ocean Day is all about. All week, the children have been coming up with their own idea of how we can make the world better for our sea life and enjoying rescuing sea creatures from plastic strewn water trays, exploring under the sea activities including fishing games and mathematics games, making pictures, crafts and continuing with junk modelling. We looked at the artist Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese sculptor and painter. She creates under the sea paintings using pointillism. The children worked hard to create some beautiful artwork which will be displayed in the hall for the summer fair.

In maths, we have continued with money. We have played bingo- by matching value of the coins to the item on sale. The children were taught tricks like counting the amount by tapping the coin to show value, swapping a coin for unifix cubes and exchanging coins for a 2p/ 5/p  10p and 20p. As we mentioned last week, coins aren’t used as much but, if possible, when paying for something, use coins and ask your child to help you. If that’s not possible, why not try some of these games to help them practise the skills.

We have not had phonics sessions this week- instead we have been focusing on small writing tasks such as holding a sentence, reading and writing high frequency words. These have been put into your child’s bookbag (the green and pink words) so that you can practise reading and writing them more at home. If you need more please let us know.

For our Theme week next week,  we will be exploring ‘Through the Decades’. To make this meaningful for the children we will be mainly looking at their life events. However, we will spend some time looking at how things have changed (Music, clothing) and asking teachers and TAs about what it was like when they were 5 and did the world turn out as they had envisaged at a young age.

If you or a grandparent would like to come and share an artefact, a memory or toy from your past (when you were about 5) and would be willing to spend 5 minutes answering questions, we would love to have you in our class. Just let one of the adults know in class or send a note to the office.

The times we would have available are:

Monday 16th 10:30-11:30am, 13:30- 15:30, Tuesday 17th 10:30- 11:30, 13:30- 14:30, Wednesday 18th, after 13:30 and Friday 20th, after 13:30.

Challenge for show and tell: Could you help your child create a simple timeline of their lives so far indicating important events e.g. walking, riding a balance bike, swimming, new baby etc. They will be able to use this in their learning during the week.

Reminders:

Village Day- Sunday 22nd June

Sports Day– Tuesday 24th June- children are required to wear a coloured t-shirt in their house colour.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Kites Team
