Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1 week 5

Dear Parents,

This week we have been exploring our emotions. We have been focusing on a pop-up book of Colour Monster and learning words like ’emotions’, ‘jumbled’, ‘confused’, ‘separated’ and ‘content’. Our literacy time has been spent discussing monsters and whether ALL are scary or not, thinking about where the colour monster lives and then looking at The Colour Monster Goes to School. Our choosing time has included emotion games, exploring different emotions pictured around the classroom, playing a game where we had to be a different animal demonstrating a different emotion (it sounds a bit mad- but it weas great fun seeing them rolling around being sad cats and excited elephants!).

In PE the children have been learning new yoga poses and demonstrating these with a yoga story. The children spent cooking time making apple lollies by decorating cooked apple (from our orchard) and putting different decorations on. The children were very lucky

In Maths, we have continued looking at teen numbers: 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. They have been making these with playdough, numicon and unifix cubes. Numicon is great resource to help with children’s counting and number skills; if you want to find out more click here. We have spent choosing time exploring this and making teen numbers with the playdough.

In Phonics, the children now know c, k, u, b and if you would like to help them revise these sounds, here is a handy video from RWI.

Next week, we will be focusing on Harvest following our start to Harvest in our whole school assembly on Tuesday. Hopefully, the children will be able to tell you all about the bread- throwing competition and impress you with their Big Red Combine Harvester song.

Challenge: There is no pressure to complete these challenges, but if your child would like to show something Harvest-themed in show and tell, you can pick one of these and send us a picture:  Harvest challenges  . OR you could take a Harvest picture on one of your weekend outing e.g. a trip to a market or a tractor in a field

Requests: As always, clean junk modelling. Any old kid -friendly/ cooking/ toy magazines, newspaper (particularly for next week).

Reminders:

Harvest– As part of Harvest, we are thinking about those who are less fortunate and collecting for the Sonning Common food bank. If you have any donations that you can offer, please bring to school before Friday 18th October and put them in the box in reception. All donations are welcome, but at the moment they are particularly short of: tinned vegetables & fruit, desserts, biscuits etc, sauces for pasta/rice, spreads, juices/squash, long life milk, cereal, toiletries, sanitary items and cleaning products. Thank you!

Open Morning for September intake: 24th October @9:30 am Please let anyone know who may be thinking about schools for next year.

17th October & 7th November (morning) – walks around the village. If you are available to help with these, please contact the office.

OPEN CLASSROOM AFTERNOON – 23rd October at 3:15pm. Please do come in and have a look around the classroom. This will be a chance to look at the displays of children’s work, try out some of our resources and chat to your child. Please note, this is an informal chance to see classes, if you require a meeting with the teacher please arrange a separate appointment or there will be a chance to discuss progress in the upcoming Parent-Teacher consultations.

24th October– School Disco. £3 including a snack and a drink. This is always a fun event, but can be quite overwhelming for our little ones. If your child dislikes loud noises, crowds or can be quite anxious- please could you chaperone your child to the event or only bring them for a short time. We would like to make the event as positive as possible for all involved.

We hope you have a great weekend and looking forward to seeing you on Monday.

The Kites Team.
