Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1 Week 1

Apologies- due technical problems, this did not get sent out last Friday as planned. Here is the update from last week.

Dear Parents,

What a week we have had! The children should all be very proud of themselves for showing bravery, resilience and perseverance this week… and so should YOU; Thank you for all your support in making our first week in Kites so positive.

The children are starting to get to know each other and we have been playing games to help to get to know names as well as singing songs and playing turn-taking games. We have had lots of activities out and taken a more continuous play approach this week; to get the children settled and familiar with their new setting. We have also been practising our lunch time routine as well as going through rules and expectations.

We had a visit from our Forest school leaders this week, the children got to meet Mrs Simic and Mr Reed for a special Q & A session before we start Forest camp sessions next week .

Next week, we will be starting to use the new timetable and moving on to focus teaching groups. Our topic will be Marvellous Me with sharing and turn-taking as our key skills. We will be starting our baseline assessments in comprehension, communication and number; which will help us to start to formulate a picture of skills and understanding in different areas. The key vocabulary we will be using: sharing, kindness, good choices, rules, responsibilities, values (kindness, respect, politeness, doing your best, truth).

In case you want to practise at home, the songs we have been singing at school are: Hello to you, Goodbye everybody

Please do let us know your child’s favourite song by informing the class teacher or replying to our Google Classroom thread as we have enjoyed having a good boogie as a brain break this week.

Reminders:

  • Forest camp starts on Wednesday, please ensure your child has the relevant kit: Long sleeve t-shirt, Water proof coat & trousers/ All-in-one, wellies and leggings if the have a dress or skirt on.
  • PE will be on Thursday, please also ensure their kit is ready for being able to participate in activities. Dark blue or black shorts/ cycling shorts/  leggings, PE t-shirt/ Spare Kites t-shirt.  In the Winter months they may require tracksuit trousers and then sports shoes as we move into Spring. We will keep you informed of these additions.
  • Due to wet weather, please ensure your child has a NAMED coat and wellies. Please also ensure their shoes are named as we had a particularly challenging time matching black shoes  to children after a lunchtime of puddle-jumping.
  • Your child will require a named water bottle everyday.
  • If your child hasn’t got one already, please could you ensure your child has a bookbag. This will be used for the next few years of life at SCPS so it is a worthwhile investment and there are some still available from our second-hand uniform shed.
  • If your child is particularly fussy about fruit and vegetables, please do put their favourite selection in their bookbag. We are not told which fruit or vegetable will be delivered as it is an item that is provided to us from outside of school. We will do our best to ensure your child does not go without snack; the apples growing in our orchard have proven particularly popular this week.
  • Please note that Curriculum Sharing is now on Monday 9th September at 5:30pm. This will be a virtual meeting and you will be emailed a link for Google Meet.
  • If possible, please send in a baby photo to look at changes as we grow up. We would also love a family photo of all the children for our display if you would prefer to email, please do so to Google Classroom or the office.

We hope you have a lovely, restful weekend

The Kites Team
