Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 6, Week 1

Dear Parents,

We have had a lovely week filled with some amazing writing! We have been working on the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and this week some of the children have enjoyed creating their own story maps inspired by the one we created together during bucket time on Monday. During our performance afternoon on Friday, where the children take it in turns to come and perform in front of their parents, one group wanted to tell the bear hunt story, and everyone enjoyed joining in with the words in chorus!

On Tuesday we had a busy morning with Science Oxford who helped us create air powered mice using milk bottles and paper. The children enjoyed launching their mice high into the sky. It was a fun filled morning.

In phonics the children have been continuing to work on blending, and cementing the knowledge of the sounds they know. We are really trying to ensure that the children know all their set 1 sounds at least, but the time they move up to year 1. The sound mats in their bookbag are a great way to see if they know them at home.

BOOK CHANGE – we apologise that we were unable to change the children’s reading books on Friday, we will do this on Monday morning instead.

We are starting to talk to the children now about moving up to year 1. We are making sure they feel familiar with the idea of moving classes, and have been spending time in the year 1 classroom in small groups, on a Monday afternoon. We will continue to do this to ensure the transition up to year 1 is as smooth as possible.

Next week we will be celebrating 2 special events. On Monday it is the start of Great Big Green Week, we will be thinking about what we can do to protect the planet, and how we can make our school a more eco friendly environment. On Friday we will be celebrating the King’s birthday, with a tea party. We will be dressing up in school (please no home dressing up clothes) and we will have a tea party together in the afternoon. If the weather is nice we may even have a picnic party!

The children may have spoken to you about preparing a performance for the end of the year. We have been working hard to polish up our singing, to show you at the end of term. We are just finalising the date for this, and as soon as I have this finalised I will let you know.

Upcoming dates:

Tuesday 23rd June – Sports day (Children come to school in a t-shirt of their house colour)

Friday 26th June – Non-uniform day

Friday 3rd July – PTA colour run

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Snowden and the Kites team
