Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 5, Week 2

Dear Parents,

We have had another bug-tastic week this week! The children have written some wonderful sentences about the different bugs they have found, and done some great artwork too!

This week in Tales Toolkit the children were challenged to write captions for the pictures that they drew. This week we took inspiration from our learning about bugs, to write a story with a bug in it! We had some fantastic bug versions of Snow White and the seven dwarfs, and Cinderella too! We started by reading the story of ‘Spinderella’ an adapted version of Cinderella, before the children went off to write their own stories. We all had lots of fun.

In maths we have been consolidating our knowledge of number bonds to 10, exploring different ways of making 10 using numicon. The children are becoming increasingly confident with their number bonds to 5 and 10. One way you could encourage this at home is asking your child – ‘how many more do you need to make 5/10?’ for example if they had 2 raisins left in a raisin packet, or 3 carrots left on their plate. Sometimes weaving maths into everyday life, makes it feel more natural to the children. If you are ever stuck on ideas for how you could include some maths learning at home, there are some videos on YouTube which were creates 2 years ago about things you can do to support your child’s maths at home. They are called Maths Made Clear. Here is the link to the episode about home learning ideas.

OPAL – this week the children have been able to access some new resources at lunch time as part of our new lunchtime provision within OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning). They have loved: using the bikes and trikes, going on the swings, climbing up and jumping off ladders and digging too. It has been wonderful to see all year groups out on the field together, the Kites have enjoyed getting to know some of the children in KS2, playing with them on the field.

Dates this term:

Sunday 10th May – On Your Bike event

Friday 22nd May – Bucklebury Farm Park trip (and end of term)

Have a lovely weekend!
