Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Next term

We have had another great week. We have been finding lots more reasons to write including voting, recording how we would like to improve our outdoor area and labelling our creations. The highlight of our week was our trip to Bucklebury Farm. As well as going on a tractor ride where we fed the deer, we enjoyed playing in the park and on the bouncy pillow and also got to meet the animals. Thank you to all of the adults that came along to help us.

Next term, we will be celebrating ‘World Environment Day’ by spending our first week of term learning all about the environment round us. We will be thinking about how we can help to do our bit by litter picking and finding out how to recycle as well reuse items that we might otherwise throw away.

In Phonics, we will be continuing with assessments to ensure that the children are working in the right level group. Here are a few videos that your child might enjoy to recap some of the sounds that we have learnt that feature a very cheeky giraffe called Geraldine Geraldine the Giraffe learns /a/ sound   Geraldine the Giraffe learns the /sh/ sound   Geraldine the Giraffe learns /ow/

In Maths, we will be focusing on money. We will look at the value of the different coins and try to add some of them together. Throughout the week, we will be trying to earn coins. Our week will then conclude with us being able to spend the coins that we have collected in our ‘shop’ where they will be able to buy a treat. Nowadays, children are not exposed to money as often so, if you have the opportunity, use them when you can. This will help children to understand the value of money and it will become less of an abstract concept. Why not give your child the opportunity to earn some coins at home by completing simple jobs around the house e.g. washing up, setting the table, putting dirty clothes in the washing machine. Your child can then count them and will have to decide if we they want to save or spend them. If they choose to spend them, do they have enough for the item that they want to buy? Will they get any change?

We hope that you all have a lovely break and look forward to seeing you back after half term.
