Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 5, Week 3

Dear Parents,

What a great week we have had! Despite only being at school for four days, we have crammed a lot of learning in! To round off our castle topic, we enjoyed a medieval banquet, enjoying the jam tarts and pottage stew that we made. We have listened carefully to the reason that VE Day was celebrated and have enjoyed creating bunting and flags to wave as well as learning a song about street parties. We thoroughly enjoyed a visit from the illustrator of the ‘Winnie the Witch’ series, Korky Paul, and he inspired us to create our own books and cast some of our own witchy spells!

In Maths, we looked at doubles of numbers. If you still feel that your child could do with a bit of a recap, have a look at this page for more help Doubling numbers – KS1 Maths – Year 2 – BBC Bitesize

Next week, we will be thinking about why we learn to write and why it is so important. We will hunt for examples of writing in real life situations, write our own shopping lists and will also be creating our own books. In Maths, we will be learning about number sentences and counting on and back to help us solve simple calculations.

We will carry on with our normal Phonics lessons. Please do look out for the extra phonics books in your child’s book bag and try to read through a few times during the week/ over the weekend. This will help with your child’s fluency and understanding.
