Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

1st week of the Summer Term

Dear Parents,

We hope you had an event-filled Easter holiday and enjoyed some quality family time. This week we have had a chance to reminisce about our Easter holiday and talk to our friends about what we enjoyed doing, how we celebrated Easter and any events that we had in common. We learnt about taking it in turns to ask questions and how to respond appropriately to what our friends have said.

This week, we have had a STEM focus of creating an encasement for an egg. The children enjoyed the book- Egg Drop, learning words such as aerodynamic, pressure, determined, ambitious and Bernoulli’s Principle and we discussed ways in which the egg could have been protected if it decided to learn to fly again. We looked at our resources and worked in pairs to make a plan. The children worked together or individually to create their designs and we tested them out. See Evidence Me for an update on how this all went.

In Maths we have been subitising and matching numbers, practising our number bonds with making rainbows and using number lines and our fingers for counting on from a larger number to a smaller number.

In Phonics, we are now in new groups focussed on where your child is and how we can further support their needs.

This week’s videos:

For blending & Reading practice  (some)

For Set 2 sound focus- ir and oo (most children)

For Set 3 sound focus for our small y1 group- ea  and oi

I understand that some children have found it tricky coming back after a long break, but next week we will be in a bit more of a routine and we will make time to discuss any worries. Following on from St George’s Day (23rd), we thought it would be interesting to look at History- namely Kings and Queens, castles, knights and battles. We will be looking at what life was like in the past and talking about the children’s knowledge so far, from having visited castles and museums over the holidays.

On Thursday 1st May, we will be having a bake sale after school under the shelter on KS1 playground from 3:10pm, to raise money for our PTA class fund. All money raised will be split between Year 1 and Kites to update class learning resources. We will be making a few treats to sell (within our classes) but would very much appreciate any delicious contributions by the morning of Thursday May 1st.

Challenge: What would it be like to be King or Queen for the day- what would you change? Or share a photo of a castle you’ve been to or a fact about a King or Queen. (ready for Show & Tell)

Reminders:

Easter Egg hunt: 25th April

Bake Sale: May 1st (KS1 playground)

Bank Holiday Mon 5th May

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
