Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4 Week 1

Dear Parents,

Welcome back after half term! We loved hearing about all the exciting activities the children have been doing. Thank you for assisting them in writing their diary entries.

This week, we have been focusing on rhyme and reading skills. We have been looking at different ways of segmenting words and looking at how different groups of words rhyme. The children have been doing rhyming scavenger hunts and drawing rhyming pictures like a ‘fish on a dish’, a ‘pug in a mug’ and a ‘frog on a log’. We have had fun spotting rhymes in books like Oi Frog! and The Rhyming Rabbit and coming up with our own rhyming word strings.

In maths we have been comparing amounts and grouping. The week started off by looking at larger and smaller amounts using the vocabulary ‘more than’ and ‘fewer’. Some children then looked at numerical digits to see if they could identify which number was greater. We completed our week by sorting, grouping and comparing smarties by investigating which colours were represented most and arranging them into a pictogram. You’ll be able to see more about this on Evidence Me! If you want to do extra activities at home- tip out the lego/ blocks/ cars/ dolls/ dinosaurs- can you sort them into groups (colours/types)? Can you compare them- how many more/ less? Which group has has the least? What is the difference between the greatest and smallest amount?

In Phonics, we have been revising special friends and individual sounds we may find tricky. Here is a quick and quiet blending activity for them to try at home.

Next week is all about books- knowing the different parts of a book, categorising books, understanding non-fiction vs fiction. We are intending to write out own version of a book and will be sharing it at the end of the week. If you would like to come and read a story next week, or help with our Easter puppet-making, please let us know and we will timetable you in.

Our challenge for show and tell is:

Can you help your child being in their favourite book next week not just on Thursday)- it would be lovely to have a range of poetry, stories and non-fiction books to share.

Reminders:

Tuesday 4th March        Pancake Day

Thursday 6th March     World Book Day

(in case you missed it- this was from our newsletter: The school will be celebrating World Book Day, which is on Thursday 6th March this year, with a day of exciting reading-based activities. We would like to ask that all children bring in a pair of slippers or something comfortable to wear on their feet on that day, along with something that they would really like to read: a favourite book, a comic, a football programme, a recipe book, a Guinness Book of Records or something else entirely, provided it can be read!)

Tuesday 18th March-   Kites visit to Earth’s Trust

Monday 24th March- STEM week  (Adapt and Change)

Tuesday 1st and Thursday 3rd April- Parent Consultations

We are looking for junk modelling- if you have any clean, recyclable material that you would be willing to part with, please do bring it in- the children have loved their shoebox creations from last term and we want to keep up the excitement for creativity!

Also, we are starting to think about Kite’s garden. Please keep us in mind if you have some unwanted seedlings- we would like to grow lots of edible produce this year.

Thank you for your continued support,

With kind regards,  The Kites Team.
