Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 2 Week 6

Dear Parents,

We are well into our countdown to Christmas! We have been reading some lovely Christmas books including the Christmasaurus and  How does Santa Go down the Chimney?  which have provoked some great conversations. Not only that, but the man HIMSELF came to see us on Tuesday… Father Christmas surprised us in our KS1 assembly and read us a lovely story called the Christmas Bear- it was magical! He even left us a little gift and a note in the book. We have continued our Christmas Around the World trip too, this week, we have been to Serbia, France, Iceland, Canada and America; exploring traditions and how their countries are similar or different to ours.

We have had many mysterious letters from the Kindness Elves who seem to sneak around our classroom at night, leaving us a variety of kindness tasks. We have been trying especially hard to show politeness to others and kindness to our teachers by helping to tidy as a team.

We have  been practising our cutting skills to create paper snowflakes (and webs!), decorating tree ornaments, counting out the pom poms to decorate the pine cones, making patterns with Christmas trees and playing lovely games on the whiteboard to practise our turn-taking skills. In Maths, we have been exploring pattern, rehearsing careful counting (some children could go to 100!!) as well ways to make 5 and 10. Next week, we will be doing some more crafting as well as revising key facts to finish the term.

Challenge: Could you help your child to practise Silent Night? First verse only! Thank you 🙂

Books: We will be taking out all the books out of bookbags at the end of next week and not sending any home for over the Christmas break. Instead, we will be sending home Christmas packs for your child to have a go at practising different skills. Please could you have a good look for any lost books at home? Thank you.

Christmas Lunch – Staff will be serving children their lunch on Wednesday 18th December.

Kites Christmas Singing: 18th December at 2:30pm (doors open at 2:15pm…as long as Christmas dinner has been cleaned away!) Please be prepared to join in with some singing and dancing at the end! Children will be required to wear their Christmas jumpers on Wednesday- they can wear them or be sent in with them in a named plastic bag.

Gift Room- Thank you to all those who donated gifts for the gift room and for those who attended our Christmas fair; all the money raised will be split between charity and our PTA fund- which will help to buy new resources for the school.

End of term: Friday 2oth at 1:15pm.

We hope you have a restful weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kites Team
