POLICY STATEMENT ON ENERGY

Aims

Sonning Common Primary School is committed to responsible energy management and will promote energy efficiency throughout the school.

Objectives

Ø    During the 2004/2005 school year, we aim to assess energy and water use and identify areas of waste throughout the school and then to set targets for reductions.

Ø    We will adopt a whole school approach to energy management by involving all sectors of the school, including governors, teachers, pupils, site manager and administrative staff.

Ø    We will set targets for reductions in energy use, expenditure and environmental emissions e.g. we aim to reduce C02 emissions by 5% over a five year period.

Ø    We will manage water usage and eliminate waste.

Ø    We will assess options for energy saving in all “building” and maintenance works undertaken on site.

Ø    We will maintain a safe, healthy and comfortable environment in our buildings.

Action Plan

Ø    We will read all of our energy and water meters on a regular basis and will evaluate usage against historical and ‘normalised’ usage. We will compare invoices from suppliers to our readings to ensure that we pay only for our actual usage.

Ø    We will evaluate how energy is integrated into the curriculum and look at ways that this can be extended and improved.

Ø    An agenda item will be submitted to the Building and Grounds committee. Costs are monitored when the Finance committee meets. For both committees a précis of usage and cost will be provided by the Bursar.

Ø    Consideration will be given as to the frequency and content of future reports to the Governors.

Ø    Energy and Environmental Issues will become a standard agenda item at departmental and school staff meetings.

Ø    A report on energy/water use and expenditure will be made to the governing body and the school (staff, students) i.e. by use of the school newsletter.

Ø    We will identify responsibilities (Governors, Building and Grounds committee, Site manager (Head teacher), Secretary, Bursar, Teachers)

Ø    We will recycle paper and use recycled materials where appropriate.

Energy and environmental Targets

Ø    Reduce heating-energy use by 5% over 5 years

Ø    Reduce electricity use by 5% over 5 years

Ø    Maintain/reduce water use

Ø    Reduce C02 emissions by over 5 years by 5%

Responsibilities
