POLICY STATEMENT ON
SEX EDUCATION
AIMS
We recognise that our pupils are growing up in a society where they are receiving varied and indiscriminate messages from their peer group and the media, concerning sexual matters. Consequently, we will accept some responsibility for helping pupils understand the facts and to develop the personal and interpersonal skills necessary for coping with life in such a society.
The Governors, in consultation with the Headteacher and staff of the school, make the following recommendations for sex education within the school.
In following these recommendations, we will be mindful of the safety and welfare of the individual pupil, our legal responsibilities and the concerns and expectations of parents.
The Curriculum
Sex education is delivered through the Science curriculum for Year 3 and Year 6. Both years also approach the subject through personal, social and health education.
The framework of sex education is contained within a general policy emphasising the importance of family life and stable personal relationships.
In Year 3, the children are introduced to the creation of life through the hatching of chicken or duck eggs in the classroom. They also visit a local farm to see young animals and they observe the life cycle of the frog.
In Year 3, through the use of videos, the pupils learn about their own growth and development from conception to birth and onwards. Health and personal hygiene are also part of the curriculum.
The subject matter of the videos is:
1) ‘Growing up’ - Puberty
2) ‘Someone new’ - Birth
3) ‘Life begins’ - Reproduction
In Year 6, the subject of sex education is addressed again but with a different emphasis. A set of three B.B.C. videos are used to stimulate discussion and to give the pupils the opportunity to talk about problems connected with puberty.
The subject matter of the three videos are:
1) Puberty - what it means.
2) Birth of the baby.
3) Sexual intercourse and heredity.
Parental Involvement
Parents have the right to see any teaching materials on sex education and to discuss their implications with the class teacher, before the children are involved.
Parents of children in Year 6 and Year 3 will be informed in September that sex education will take place during that year. Video material will be made available for parents to view.
Any parent has the right to withdraw their child from receiving sex education at school.
