You’ve designed your instrument, so now all you need to do is make it! But, to make it you need the materials (boxes, pots, beans etc). Bring it in for Friday – if you don’t bring your bits in, then you won’t be able to make your design and you’ll end up with a bean can with some elastic bands over the top. It is up to you now, so be the independent Year 3 and start getting your stuff together. Yey!

Reading, reading, reading!

Well done to everyone who is reading at least 4 times a week – it means you’re getting lots of team points and at the same time you are getting better at reading!

Remember all reading is good reading – so get reading: signposts, newspapers, information on the interest, recipes and any other chances you get.

If you come across a word you don’t know in your reading, then look up the meaning in a dictionary or you talk to your parents about what it means. If you like the word, then learn how to spell it so you can include it in your next piece of writing.

D&T – Musical Instruments

So far we have looked at strings, skins and shakers. This week we are exploring wooden blocks but then… it is designing and making time!
Ideally we would like to finish the instrument project by half term, so you can take your instruments home and play them beautifully to your parents! However, to get to the finished product stage you need to start thinking about what materials you will need to make your masterpiece! So, what we need you to do is (with the help of your parents) start collecting any pots, boxes, bottles, elastic bands, balloons, wooden blocks, pasta, beans (we have enough tins) and anything else you will need to make your instrument. Bring them into school in a bag with YOUR NAME on (very important).

Finally – remember that we looked at how important it was for our finished product not only to sound good but to look good also? Start thinking about how you will make your instrument appealing to someone else. Start collecting bits and bobs like feathers, buttons, beads etc that will make your instrument look stunning – bring them in and keep them safe in your drawer at school.

Oliver would like to recommend a book. It is called “The Usborne Write Your Own Story Book”. He likes it because it give him ideas and tips on story writing. It has ideas for spy stories, movies, comics, time travel, short stories and plenty of ideas to inspire buddy authors.

Thank you to everyone who helped with our cake sale this afternoon. Many thanks if you donated cakes or bought cakes. Also an extra special thank you to those who waited patiently, in the baking sun – until 4 o’clock, for their children to finish selling the last few cakes. A career in sales might be the future for some of Y3!

Our unofficial total is £288 – we wouldn’t have been even close to this amount without all your help today.

Just a reminder that if you’re doing your weekly shop this weekend, don’t forget cake ingredients! The Y3 cake sale is after school on Thursday 2nd, May (check earlier post for all the details).

Cake making is the perfect opportunity/excuse for you to do some fun, practical maths at home – weighing and time!

Year Three ICT

One of the units we teach in ICT this term involves the children understanding the basics of sound recording, editing, and mixing. We have started the topic by demonstrating the use of a piece of sound editing software called Audacity. It is a free download and can be useful for all sorts of sound recording and manipulation. If you would like it available at home for your child to experiment with, please download it from the Audacity website.

This week the children have taken part in an exercise to record and mix simple songs. The results really do speak for themselves – enjoy.

Cake Sale – 2nd May

The time has come for Y3 to hold their cake sale. Cake sales are being held throughout the year by each year group, to help raise money for our new multi use games area.

The sale will take place on Thursday 2nd May, on the playground, straight after school. Big cakes and little cakes will be greatly appreciated. Large cakes will be sold for £4 and 4 small cakes for a £1. Please bring cakes in to class on Thursday morning. If you want your box back, please label it.

Members for Y3 have also been attending “bead club” where they have been making bead bracelets. They will be selling their products for £1 each to contribute to the money raised from selling the cakes.

So far Y4 have raised the most from a cake sale – let’s try to beat their total!
