Following our assessment last week I have looked at the questions which caused most problems. These are the areas that we will be working on over the next couple of weeks:-
Reading graphs: Pictograms (where one bottle stands for 100, then calculating what is meant by 3 and a quarter bottle); Venn diagrams (remembering to include data which is held in the area where 2 circles meet or data which is outside of both circles); Carroll diagrams (even/not even; multiple of 5 /not multiple of 5); reading scales and marking measurements on a scale
Time: Reading and interpreting timetables (what train must you catch to be in Manchester before 11am?)
Measurements: How can mm in a cm/cm in a metre/ metre in a km? Grams in a kg, ml in a litre, minutes in a an hour, days/weeks in a year, days in each month?
Problem solving : Recognising which operation to use, especially division and subtraction. E.g. How many £2.50 tickets can you buy with £87 = 87 divided by 2.50; How many more girls than boys attended the concert = number of girls subtract the number of boys. The term ‘find the difference’ often is not recognised as subtraction.
We are working on our mental Maths skills too – adding and subtracting pairs of numbers plus knowing your tables are things that can easily be practised at home or on the car!
