Thank you to all parents and children in Year 6 for making the last few days fun and enjoyable. The play, assembly and BBQ went really well and the children really pulled out all the stops to perform so well.

Thanks to parents who helped with costumes and to those who came to support and laugh, clap and cheer on the night.

Thanks to Mrs Abbott for the ice cream van – what a treat!
Thanks to Mrs Atkinson for her burger donation.
Thanks to all parents who came to say goodbye on the last day.
Thanks to Year 6 for their beautiful daffodil and sunflower pictures.

And a huge thanks for all the lovely presents and cards we received: chocolates, flowers, key rings, wine, more chocolates, stained glass, jewellery, smellies, mirrors, our fab loungers, mugs, and more chocolates!

We have made some good friends at Sonning Common primary and will miss them all.

Good luck Year 6 as you continue on with your education. We have enjoyed your company this year and will have our fingers crossed for you.

All the very best,
Miss Price and Miss Gordon

On Thursday, Year 6 held an election of their own! Children formed their own political parties, each hoping to win the majority of votes in the Sonning Common Primary constituency.

The first job was to come up with a name for their party and a powerful slogan. They decided on the main roles within the party, electing a party leader, a budget minister, an environment minister, a social minister, a learning mister and a behaviour minister.

Once roles had been decided, the children undertook their research. What is it that the children of Sonning Common want for their school?

Using this information, each party picked the a few main areas they wanted to address and came up with some priority policies; friendship benches, smaller class sizes, an anti bullying team, just to name a few.

Each group then had time to work on a persuasive campaign using devices they had learnt in Literacy. They made posters, rosettes, and banners and wrote a manifesto.

We ended the day each party leader giving a speech and sharing the main policies in their party’s manifesto. Not only were the speeches fantastic but so were the questions that other political party members asked and the thoughtful responses given.

A final ballot decided that the new Prime Minister of Sonning Common is none other than Sam A, the leader of the Peace Party.

On Wednesday 28th April, Sonning Common’s Year 6 tag rugby team took part in the Oxfordshire Youth Tag Rugby tournament at Hithercroft.

After a great performance at the previous rugby festival at Gillotts, the team were confident they could do well. Our first game, against St Mary’s, was a close one. Our attack was outstanding and although scoring tries was not a problem, we left a few holes in our defence and allowed the opposition to score just one more try than us. The final score was 6-5 to St Mary’s.

After discussing strategies to improve our defence, we went in to the second game against Wheatley full of determination and won this game 9-0!

Now full of confidence, we were able to produce another great victory in our final game of the round robin beating Lewknor School 8 tries to 2.

Heading in to the quarter finals, we were feeling anxious. It was a close game but Sonning Common had the edge and we beat Fir Tree school 4 tries to 3.

The semi-finals were tough! We faced a school as fast as us in attack and as tight as us in defence. We knew this would be a close game. As the full time horn blew, we were tied. The winner would be the first team to score. The opposition started with the ball and despite our best efforts to make 6 tags to turn the ball over, our final tag was made on the line and the try given!

I was immensely proud of all the children who took part. Not only did they play some of the best tag rugby I have ever seen, but they were outstanding representatives of our school. Well done Year 6!
