Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 8th January

Happy New year from Year 1!

This term we will be doing some geography work on where we are: starting to name continents and oceans, finding the UK on a work map and naming the countries that make up the UK. We will also be making and using simple maps and plans and giving and following directions. You could support your child at home by encouraging them to learn their address or draw maps of familiar routes. Our computing work will be using simple programmable toys to follow a route and debugging any errors.

In science we will be learning about materials: what things are made of and why (e.g. why wood or plastic might make a good chair but rubber or chocolate would not!) In art we will be exploring sculpture, and in P.E. will be doing some work on different kinds of folk dance. In PHSCE we have already been talking about what a goal is (something you would like to be able to do but can’t yet) and devising our own personal goals.

This term Mrs Hoogenberg/Mrs Skidmore’s class will have Forest Camp on Mondays and swimming on Wednesdays and Miss Bartlett’s class will have Forest Camp on Wednesdays and no swimming. It might be a good idea to check that things like P.E. kit/trainers still fit your child because they may not tell you themselves!
